Daily excerpt from my book, Why We Are Born Today we moved on to the new section. * Ego as the isolated fearful child * Even though the soul has individuality, it is still aware of its connection to one another and to the Source. Souls know one another and are at peace with other souls. The ego, on the other hand, is cut off—it is only a collection of thoughts and judgments after all. Because the ego is limited in its knowing, it compares oneself to others in its attempt to figure out its place among others. Then the ego thinks it is either better or worse than others. In other words, the ego views others either as a burden or a threat. So the ego builds walls around itself to protect itself from such perceived burden or threat, making the ego even more isolated. At this point, meditation can become yet another thing to boast about and so is service. The ego probably pays only intellectual respect to beauty. Love can be a pathway to salvation, and sure enough, the ego craves love—or more accurately, to be loved. The ego can love only for the sake of being loved, so most of the time it finds faults in the lover before the love grows to the selfless level. This is why suffering is the path to disidentification for many people. When we notice how miserable our life is because of our identification with the ego and its judgments, controls, and defensiveness, it’s easy to hate the ego. But again, this is only a false disidentification. The soul cannot hate. The soul knows only to love.
