Daily life humbles me, in the best of ways. Running a non-conventional school program operating as non-profit means fighting hard for money and not getting paid, monetarily speaking, very much, and having limited resources and many to serve and I wouldnt give it up for anything. Last week a teenager finds my program. She has been homeless for the past two years, living out of a car. She dropped out of her high school to literally survive. Before talking school, I begin to cautiously ask her about how she eats each day and sleeps. As she slowly starts to unravel bits of her story with tears streaming down her cheeks, I ask if she is okay letting me know some basic things she needs to feel more comfortable in her current situation. A pillow, some sheets, some food. She shows me the grill she stores in the trunk of the car she sleeps in - a luxury to have food to grill on it. The non-profit I work for steps it up immediately and over the weekend we get her food, towels, blankets, sheets, pillows to make her life just a bit more comfortable. Today she tells me, crying, as I walk her to her home, her car, after class that her best friend passed a few months ago, and she believes her best friend sent me to her. She says you are already changing my life - you care. Really thats all it takes just show people you care and mean it. Theres a lot of excess in the world and a ton of need. Never underestimate the power you have to make a difference in the simplest of ways.
