Dairy farming isnt always sunshine and rainbows, there are bad days. Last night a first calf heifer was struggling during labor. My father-in-law went to help her and discovered that the calfs head was flipped back and not able to make its way out. After various unsuccessful attempts of trying to turn the calfs head to the proper position, my FIL had to call our vet. He knew the mom and baby were likely in pain and he had to get the calf out as quickly as possible. The vet arrived to assist, but sadly the calf did not make it out alive. The momma is swollen, but doing alright. Farmers care for their animals the best they can, but sometimes the job can be tough and disheartening.
