Justice P.R. Shivakumar passed the order on a writ petition filed by M.P. Mariappan of Nambiyur, Erode district, who challenged the order passed by the authorities restraining him to enter into the village. In the petition, Mr. Mariappan said that in 2007 he approached Ayyasamy, manager of Karpaga Vinayagar Kamatchi Amman Kalyana Mandapam, Gandhipuram, Nambiyur for the ear-boring function of his daughter. On coming to know that he belonged to Arunthathiyar community, Ayyasamy refused to book the mandapam and went to the extent of proclaiming that such community people could not conduct any function there. On such refusal, Mariappan preferred a complaint before Nambiyur police station. After the complaint was lodged, the manager agreed to rent out the mandapam. Again the caste Hindus threatened him to withdraw the reservation and also stated that the mandapam was meant for upper caste people alone. When he lodged complaints with the Sub-collector and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Gobichettipalayam for immediate action against those who showed discrimination on grounds of caste, he said instead of taking action against them, the authorities passed orders prohibiting him and 12 others from entering into the village. Challenging the order, he contended that the authorities were shielding the offenders. Disposing of the petition, Mr. Justice Shivakumar pointed out the police and other authorities had not handled the case in a proper manner. He also said, “The petitioner had suffered humiliation as the function was to be called off on the eleventh hour because of the failure on the part of the officials to discharge their duties.” The Judge also directed the Erode Superintendent of Police to register a case against those persons involved in the incident under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and also proceed against then Inspector of Police Nambiyur. “The petitioner has suffered caste discrimination’’ The Hindu Dalit bodies to unite in fight against communalism thehindu/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-tamilnadu/dalit-bodies-to-unite-in-fight-against-communalism/article5794733.ece The Ambedkar People’s Movement has decided to unite Dalit organisations to support candidates opposing communalism in constituencies where Dalit organisations are contesting and Congress candidates in all other constituencies during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.
