Dan Ilotts report on the Volleyroos first two practice matches against Japan.. Less than a week to go, folks, until Australia returns to the World League! Whos excited? VOLLEYBALL TEAM AUSTRALIA MEN – VOLLEYROOS (WORLD LEAGUE TOUR 2014) SATURDAY 17/5/2014 – CUNEO, ITALY AUSTRALIA v JAPAN (INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY SERIES – MATCH 1) RESULT 0 : 4 (21-25, 22-25, 24-26, + 17-25) Starters and Points Scored: Peacock (0), Walker (2), Passier (13), Edgar (8), Douglas-Powell (7), Zingel (c) (8), Perry (L). Subs: Sukochev (1), Mote (5), Sanderson (7), Williams (12), Roberts (DNP), Guymer (DNP), White (DNP). The VTAM Volleyroo’s are currently based in the city of Cuneo in Italy for a preparation camp and friendly matches with the Japanese men’s national team prior to their first round of the FIVB World League commencing in Belgium next weekend. Earlier this evening Australia and Japan played a friendly match over 4 sets with both team’s taking the opportunity to try different playersthroughout the evening. Japan played consistently well throughout the match, producing some very strong jump serving at times which challenged the Australian reception and was the difference in Japan winning the first and second sets with great pressure in key moments. The other key area from today’s game was the direct error rate by Australia who struggled to find a rhythm with their service game and combining well in attack. The team’s play again on Sunday. Australia and Japan played their second friendly match today at the Pala Bre Banca in Cuneo, Italy. Australia played with a strong determination to win after Japan won the first encounter yesterday and the extra focus and effort paid dividends for the Volleyroo’s as the won the match 4 sets to 1. Australia showed good improvements in every area today starting withservice reception which was the best for the tour to date. This allowed setters Peacock and Sukochev to fully utilise the team’s offence which they did to good effect. The Australian coaches were pleased with the team’s performance today and the improvements made in key areas. The team’s have a practice day tomorrow before fighting out the final match on Tuesday.
