Dangers of Bootcamp & CrossFit using overhead exercises This morning i saw a boot camp group using car tires for their workouts, be aware what risks those kind of exercise can be to your body. Overhead squats & overhead exercises when done correctly can be beneficial to your exercise program, if done in isolated exercises (circuit training,..) and with low to moderate loading (weight) the risk factor is controllable. But some Boot camp’s & similar sessions I’ve seen use overhead exercises without controlling the technique/posture . Most times there is a series of exercises loading the same muscle groups and this is high risk for injuries. A lack of flexibility in the shoulder joint, restricted scapula movement, Hip flexor restrictions, pre- existing lower back pain should all send alarm bells to the client & trainer. Unfortunately most clients trust the trainer and their program, pushing through the pain to burn more calories ,... Don’t do it!! If your coach/trainer is competent he should be able to point out problems in your posture and not follow through day by day with exercise which clearly are not beneficial for you and cause more problem down the track. A good Boot camp is when there is a balance of exercises, Cardio & strength but also postural corrections and tips for “fixing” them should be part of any training not just one on one. If you don’t get what you should, change training or start alternative training sessions like Pilates, yoga,.. where you can focus on limitations & imbalances in your body. If your still in doubt and “need” to continue the way you have go through these checkpoints . Learn about common injuries & what to do.
