Danish liberal MEP Morten Løkkegaard Venstre, Danmarks Liberale Parti launched an initiative to redefine the debate on what it means to be European and what the European project means to its citizens. The projet was endorsed last weekend in Berlin by Germanys Chancellor Angela Merkel. This cultural initiative was given life by artists, writers, intellectuals and many others from the creative sector to counter populism and nationalism. The message from the artists, intellectuals, scientists and writers who wrote the Charter is clear: Arts and sciences must be brought into political life to better engage and include citizens in the developing dialogue on Europe. Løkkegaard said: “Politicians alone are not able to express what it means to be European. So we have called on scientists, writers, intellectuals and artists to step in as storytellers. Art and science have been neglected for too long in the political process. This has not always been the case in the past.
