Dare 2B Daring – June 25, 2013 A daily devotional published by Risk Takers for Christ, Inc. (Permission granted to reprint with proper attribution.) “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day, as if nothing had yet been done before.” – C.S. Lewis This past weekend, a journeyman golfer by the name of Ken Duke won the Traveler’s Championship for his first PGA Tour win at the ripe old age of 44. Going into the tournament, which was the 187th of his previously non-descript career, Duke was ranked just 144th in the world. The third-round leader was Bubba Watson, the 2012 Masters champion who had previously won the Traveler’s in 2010. Watson shot 63-67-67 in the first three rounds to lead the field at the end of the previous two days. However, like almost all PGA tournaments, the Traveler’s Championship is comprised of four rounds, not three. And so, when Watson put his tee shot on the 16th hole into the water on his way to a triple bogey, the tournament was Duke’s to win – or lose. Chris Stroud chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole to tie Duke in regulation and so, the co-leaders had to play two extra holes before Duke won in sudden death. His paycheck for winning was a cool $1,098,000. As C.S. Lewis noted above, life is a series of daily adventures, one after another. At the beginning of each one – and throughout each day – it is critical for us to realize that yesterday’s accomplishments won’t get us very far. Either will yesterday’s faith. Like God’s mercies, our faith needs to be renewed every morning and then hour by hour during the course of each day. Like the Jews in the wilderness, our reliance upon God must be a daily practice. That’s the one proven way to win at golf – and life. By the way, on the same day that Ken Duke broke through for his first PGA tour win, 60-year old Craig Stadler won on the Champions Tour for the first time in eight years and 170 tournaments. Never give up, my friend. Victory – perhaps your greatest one – may be right around the corner. “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV) - Rev. Dale M. Glading, President risktakersforchrist.org
