Date: Prior to June 6, 2012 City and Country: Possibly Sinjar, Iraq Age of victim: 19 GBV: Possible honor killing disguised as suicide Perpetrators: Bothers of the victim Punishment: Unknown A 19 year old female was married to her cousin by her father. He claimed she was happy in the marriage, but said after the marriage that she started “talking crazy” and “having hallucinations”. This made him take her to a Yazidi sheik who said she was possessed. Before the exorcism could be performed, the father said he found her dead, and that she had stabbed herself to death. Her brothers are being held on suspicion of murder. It is unknown whether or not the brothers were prosecuted. Source:nytimes/2012/06/07/world/middleeast/more-suicides-in-iraq-region-where-arranged-marriage-is-common.html?_r=0 This however, is a possibly case in a rising trend. With the increase in suicides as a result of forced marriages, some families are committing honor killings and reporting them as suicides. The courts typically report them as suicides also, despite possibly knowing that they are in fact honor killings. Once again, lack of law enforcement response and tribal norms dominating the government and justice system results in the continued perpetuation of GBV crimes. This sends out a message to women that their experiences with GBV crimes will go unpunished and a message to the perpetrators that they can continue these crimes without experiencing any consequences.
