Date of Detection: July 20, 2013 Current Size: 20,325 acres Location: 10 miles West of Challis, ID Containment: 50% Resources on Fire: There are currently 601 personnel on this incident, including the following resources: CREWS TYPE 1 HELICOPTERS (HEAVY) TYPE 2 HELICOPTERS (MED.) TYPE 3 HELICOPTERS (LIGHTS) ENGINES DOZERS WATER TENDERS 12 4 2 3 20 3 6 Remarks: The fire moved little yesterday; smoke columns were visible most of the afternoon and into the evening along the northwest side of the fire. Direct suppression opportunities are limited in Pats Creek, White Valley Creek, and Bear Creek due to safety concerns associated with the terrain, potential fire behavior, and snags. Accurate acreage growth is also hard to determine in this area. Efforts are being made to update this information. Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) were modified and reduced to accommodate private aircraft. This will permit normal flight activities over the southern portion of the fire to resume allowing access to private inholding airstrips and permit public access to wilderness recreational opportunities. A public meeting was held for the Challis community last evening. Approximately 60 people attended and were given an overview of what the fire has done to this point and strategies being considered for the future. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session. The containment percentage has increased to 50 percent. This area includes the southwest, south and southeast perimeter of the fire. It is no longer threatening the Custer Motorway or the town of Challis. The other 50 percent of the fire perimeter is inaccessible to firefighters. Plans for today are to continue preparation for indirect firing operations on the north and east sides of the fire and to continue to mop-up. Fire rehabilitation activities in the south and west sides of the fire are also taking place. Our aviation resources remain the same with nine helicopters, seven of which are heavys that will be working along the northeast perimeter to keep the fire in check, where possible. We will also provide initial attack support if requested by the local agencies. ### Closure Area in Effect: Emergency Area Closure Order Number 04-13-13-552 went into effect July 29th to provide protection to forest visitors from current fire safety hazards.
