Dated: 3/17/14 Raising the Minimum Wage In his 2014 State of the Union address, President Obama called on Congress to pass the Fair Minimum Wage Act and raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. House Democrats responded with the POPVOX teams favorite legislative move: A Discharge Petition. If they get If at least half of the Members of the House (218) sign onto the petition to discharge a bill, it will be brought to the House Floor for a vote. Weigh in: • Fair Minimum Wage Act (HR 1010): Would increase the Federal minimum wage in three stages: $8.20 an hour three months after the bill is enacted, $9.15 an hour a year after enactment and to $10.10 an hour two years after enactment. (The discharge petition for this bill has 195 signatures, and needs 218 to be sent to the House Floor for a vote.) • Senate Fair Minimum Wage Act (S 460): Would also increase the Federal minimum wage in three stages to $10.10 per hour. According to our Hill Sources, the Senate is expected to consider the minimum wage increase after recess.
