Dave Abbott – you will love this post. My GE clothes dryer started to run very very hot, burning hot and I was afraid to use. Via internet looked up the possible problems and tackled the easiest first (clean the vent) and left the hardest for last. There are three thermostats inside the machine. I replaced all three since it’s a big job to dismantle. Of the three I suspect the problem was the thermostat for the heading element. That thermostat will stay close which enable the heating element to get hot. At 240 degrees the thermostat will open and the heating element cools. This will cycle on and off while the dryer is running keeping a temperature in a range appropriate to dry clothes. Big job and now the dryer works perfect again.
