Dave Carter of the National Bison Association - The statement that bison in commercial herds are routinely interbred with cattle is false. The presence of cattle genetics in a share todays bison is the result of some experiments conducted by the five ranchers who helped save the species from extinction in the late 1800s. Those experiments did not work, so they discontinued the practice. the National Bison Associations Code of Ethics specifically prohibit crossbreeding of bison with any other species.
