Dave listed 10 (+5) books that influenced him and tagged me to do the same. Here are my 10, in order of influence, followed by the five that almost made the cut. Please note that my understanding of book includes the agrupation of volumes (series, if you will) of a single holistic creation of a particular author. I mean, seriously, the publishers idea of a handheld book with physical pages is much too limited a concept for any writer! 1. Khalil Gibrans The Prophet (1923). 2. Will and Ariel Durants The Story of Civilization 11-volume set - Our Oriental Heritage (1935), The Life of Greece (1939), Caesar and Christ (1944), The Age of Faith (1950), The Renaissance (1953), The Reformation (1957), The Age of Reason Begins (1961), The Age of Louis XIV (1963), The Age of Voltaire (1965), Rousseau and Revolution (1967), and The Age of Napoleon (1975) ++PLUS the addendum, The Lessons of History (1968). 3. Frank Herberts Dune saga - Dune (1965), Dune Messiah (1969), Children of Dune (1976), God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), ChapterHouse: Dune (1985). 4. J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings trilogy - The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1954), and The Return of the King (1955) ++PLUS the prequel, The Silmarillion (1977). 5. Umberto Ecos Foucaults Pendulum (1988). 6. Douglas Adams Hitchhiker five-book trilogy - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (1981), The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980) Life, the Universe and Everything (1982), So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (1984) and Mostly Harmless (1992). 7. Yochai Benklers The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Market and Freedom (2006). 8. Lawrence Lessigs Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity (2004) 9. Daniel J. Boorstins The Creators: A History of Heroes of the Imagination (1992) 10. Robert L. Heilbroners The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times and Ideas of the Great Economic Thinkers (1953) Almost made it: 1.C. Edwin Bakers Media, Markets, and Democracy (2001), on loan from the Acting Solicitor Generals own personal library. Hahaha 2.J.B.L. Reyes and R. C. Punos An Outline of Philippine Civil Law (1967). 3. Joaquin Bernas The 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines: A Commentary (2009 ed.). 4. Fritz Leibers The Knight and Knave of Swords (1988), the final collection of stories about Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. 5. Isaac Asimovs Foundations Edge (1982) and Foundation and Earth (1986), a two-part tie-in ending for his original Foundation saga, Robots saga, and Spacer saga. So whats your Top 10?
