David Brooks has a smart piece on the power of books in todays NY Times. I found it particularly insightful after a weekend spent with Julian Barnes A Sense of an Ending. This is a thin book, with a deceptively breezy narrative that lures you in with a skillful patience. Yet by the final page, I could not help but be surprised by its resonating power. In the end, it is a mediation on memory, how our thoughts about the past are often subjective, self-serving, and just plain wrong. And I spent a large part of the weekend reviewing previously held certainties and wondering if they were so many delusions.
