David Clarke: Few British fungi have a date-brown cap. This is one of the commonest fungi – the Deer Shield (Pluteus cervinus), growing on rotting wood, often in small clumps. The cap has the texture of beaten metal. The young gills are almost white and give no immediate hint that the spores they will cast are pink. (The spores are on a flat sheet – the shapes of the gills create the almost 3D pattern).
