David Dell`s patriotic photo of the week reminded me of the story of our Spirit of the fighting Yank statue at the Veteran`s Memorial Cemetery (corner of Gratiot & Krafft). One morning several Vet`s arrived to raise the flag & were furious to see his head was missing. They called for a search party & eventually found it in the canal nearby, obviously the work of vandals. Repair was done, but the experts at Jones Monument Co. felt it had become weak & brittle after years of exposure to the elements. You can see him now on the second floor of the Port Huron Museum. Local Veterans spent months to raise the funds for an identical, but stronger copy. Here are some shots of the re-dedication ceremony...
