David Randall, who has coached at both the high school and college levels, has been named the head coach of the Mount Saint Joseph Academy men’s basketball team. He takes over a program that has consistently been a playoff contender, and which won its last state championship in 2012 in Division II. Coach Randall explained that, “I am very excited to be given the opportunity to coach at a quality program like MSJ, with its long tradition of athletic success and proven track record of academic excellence.” Coach Randall served an Associate Head Coach for men’s basketball at Green Mountain College, and then as the Head Coach for freshman men’s basketball at Fair Haven Union High School. The coach indicated his thanks to Coach Tucker of Green Mountain and Coach Prenevost of Fair Haven for the opportunity to learn under them these last few years. He added that, I look forward to using what I have learned throughout my career at Green Mountain College and Fair Haven High School to maintain the level of success that the MSJ community has come to expect.” Sarah Fortier, Principal of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, said, “I am very excited to have Dave Randall join the Mountie community. His enthusiasm, dedication and passion for teaching young men the skills of basketball speaks volumes about his coaching ability. It is sure to be a great season. Paul Gallo, a member of the coaching selection committee explained that, “the committee appreciated Daves coaching principles, his concept of what it means to be a team, and that each player on a ten or twelve man roster will have a defined and contributing role, which will create a really exciting opportunity for the MSJ student-athlete. Coach Randall indicated that his role is to assist in the development of young men through athletics and to prepare them for life after high school basketball.” The coach has a Masters degree in Management and Leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and a Bachelors degree in sports administration from Castleton State College. He explained that, “this opportunity was especially intriguing to me because I graduated from a small Christian school in West Virginia very similar to MSJ. Small class sizes, individualized attention, and a family-like atmosphere are unique to smaller private schools and that is something that I want to be part of again.” MSJ has a proud basketball tradition, winning its first state championship in 1954. The Mount has won state basketball championships with either its men’s or its women’s teams in each of the last four decades. The women’s team made the Division IV state championship last year, while the men made the Division II quarterfinals. Athletics and other extracurricular activities are an important part of the MSJ experience, and almost all MSJ students participate in them. Mount Saint Joseph Academy is a college preparatory Catholic high school located in Rutland, Vermont, specializing in educating the mind and spirit for more than a century. MSJs tradition of academic excellence in the Rutland region dates back to its founding by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1882. For more information, visit msjvermont.org or call (802) 775-0151.
