David Slocum, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole - TopicsExpress

David Slocum, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole when he was 17, was released on Friday from South Bay Correctional Facility in Florida. David was resentenced in December 2011 to 29 years in prison after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Graham v. Florida that it is unconstitutional to sentence children to life in prison without parole for crimes in which there was not a homicide. He served 19 years and was credited for good behavior. “David is what the Supreme Court envisioned in Graham v. Florida,” said his attorney, Melanie L. Casper. “In 1995, his life sentence began with no hope for ever living outside of those prison walls. Despite the denial of hope that comes with a life-without-parole sentence, David earned his GED, his certificate for Data Entry, his certificate for Business Administration and received very few disciplinary reports during his time in prison. David demonstrated maturity and rehabilitation and an ability to obey laws and accomplish goals he set for himself.” David is now 35. He is from near Palm Beach, Florida.
