David Sparks UPDATE! In Christ alone my hope is found He is - TopicsExpress

David Sparks UPDATE! In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. Our story is changing a bit after this week. David shared with you that on Tuesday he suffered a break in his right humerus bone while trying to do a slide transfer from his shower chair to his wheelchair. While reading the x-ray that evening they discovered that there was a fairly large lesion on the bone which caused it to weaken, and as a result the pressure from his upper body caused it to snap. On Tuesday I will take him back to U of L so they can do an ablation to that site to stop blood flow to the tumor, and then will insert a plate and rod. Hopefully this will stabilize his arm and allow him to do a bit more for himself. During the course of this past week we had a long conversation with his oncologist concerning the chemo he was going to begin when it arrived. She told us that the side effects of this drug are very toxic. They include peeling of the skin on your hands and feet, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and ulcers that run from your mouth all the way down your GI tract. The added side effects for him, because of his immobility, include a high likelihood of strokes and blood clots. Along with listing all of these things, she also informed us that taking this drug would only prolong his life for a few months. This would be months spent hospitalized just to keep him comfortable and to counteract the reaction of his body. Without this drug we are looking at weeks. They cannot give us a real timetable. The break to his arm alarmed them very much, and also confirmed how aggressive this cancer has become in his body. After speaking with Dr. Moffitt, David has decided to forego taking the chemo drug. We are choosing quality of life over longevity with no quality of life at all. Following his surgery this week he will come home under the care of Hospice. Luke Sparks, Megan Sparks Bracken, Matt Bracken and Kelsey Wilson have been home this weekend. David handled telling our children with such depth of love and concern for them. Our hearts are shattered into a million pieces. But as we have maneuvered through this weekend, as we have shared great laughs together, as we have talked about the things that really matter, we know that God will handle these moments with even a deeper depth of love than we can imagine. I have told David on more than one occasion that seeing him in pain is the very worst thing I have dealt with in this last year. He has met each challenge giving his very best, working his hardest, and believing in a better future. While he has certainly had very difficult moments in this last week, he is very this believing in the hope of a beautiful future in a place where no pain exists, where blessings overflow. We thank you for your continued prayers. Please dont stop. We know the blessing of this weekend and the chance for all of us to be together. It was a reminder of the beauty of this family that we have created, and the hope that EACH of us share in the love that Christ offers as our sustainer and comforter. We love you. We cherish you. We could not see through all of this without you!
