David de Gea looked set to miss out on a spot in Spain’s squad - TopicsExpress

David de Gea looked set to miss out on a spot in Spain’s squad for the 2014 Brazil World Cup but Victor Valdes has now been ruled out of the tournament with an anterior cruciate ligament injury which opens up a spot in the squad. Napoli’s Pepe Reina and Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas are the other two goalkeepers who are regularly called up to by Vicente del Bosque but he will now have to choose a third which is where De Gea’s opportunity is. Real Madrid’s Diego Lopez would be another likely candidate to replace Valdes in the squad but Vicente del Bosque would be foolish to completely overlook the excellent form that De Gea has been in this season. Within ten minutes of Valdes’ injury being announced, De Gea sent a message of support to Valdes on Twitter. Classy move, Dave. Despite the abject performances of others, De Gea has flourished and has built on his excellent campaign last year that saw him named the Premier League Goalkeeper of the Year. The older De Gea gets, the better he will become and although a spot at the 2014 World Cup is still a pipe dream, Valdes’ injury gives him a glimmer of hope.
