Davidson Dismisses Large A Class | Pendergrass Scores #7 | Junior Tops Turfs a 4th Time | Keeler Wins First Non Wing Feature of Season | Rainey Runs Out to First Career Restricted Victory Cody Morris I-44 Riverside Speedway Official Release Saturday, September 13th, 2014 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area race teams had nearly three weeks to mull over the seriousness of I-44 Riverside Speedway’s new incentives purse system as a rainout followed a scheduled bye week over Labor Day. The Turf Tire and Junior Sprint divisions had each lurched into the first purse increase in their respective divisions, but the headlining stock classes raced just a few under the 25 mark required to achieve the first 40% purse increase. With nothing but huge specials the rest of the season, even most of the speedway staff expected the huge jump in support to come in next week’s Oklahoma vs. Texas (TOWR) micro event. In fact, the highest increase and EASILY the best paying weekly micro sprint purse in the region had already been locked in place with well over 30 entries expected in the two headlining micro sprint classes. But the future expectation became tonight’s celebrated reality as over 30 drivers checked in to compete in the winged A Class division, pushing the one night purse to both a season and statewide best $1,800 featuring $400 to win and $50 to start, the latter being distributed even as pit passes remain another regional best at just $20. It’s an incredible development just three races into the new purse structure that rewards participation and pays back that support in a manner that is unmatched in weekly micro sprint racing, or even micro series racing in the Sooner State for that matter. Riverside’s purse increase system encourages race teams to engage and challenge one another to participate, with the collective reward being to race for unprecedented reward. To reverse the trends of costs always going one way while purses remain flat. Here when we get a dozen more cars, it’s not a happier bank account. It’s rewarded racers with an incentive to encourage everyone they know to get involved. And with tonight’s success, now we move to a monster show next Saturday, September 20th as the Lucas Oil POWRi West Midgets ride in for the “South Side Showdown”. The final Midget solo at I-44 Riverside before the they headline the 2nd annual Twister Nationals on October 10-11. Also, the Lone Star State arrives en masse under the Texas Open Wheel Racing banner to take on the top micro sprints from the Sooner State in the A Class, Non Wing, and Restricted divisions. The A Class and Non Wing will both race for a locked in $400 to win / $50 to start, while the Restricted division will be joined by the Turf Tire and Junior Sprints in the purse increases. With 15-19 entries in those divisions - the purse jumps up 40%, at 20 entries or more it goes to a whopping 80% increase up from the original purse. As the micro sprints gear up for the Red River Rumble, the Sooner State reps received an urgent message tonight to spend the next week getting ready. Champions Cup Round 19 - The Rundown A CLASS - 31 entries *2nd increase $400 to win / $50 to start Kyle Keeler and Jeremy Butler formed front row of the 20 lap A Class main event. The event was quickly halted when Mustang’s Joe Martin flipped very wildly in turn three, landing on his wheels and going another 50 feet before coming to a stop. Martin was banged up and needed several minutes to exit the car. Martin was okay, but sore and with a mangled mount. Once underway, Keeler fired like a rocket ahead of the field and led former track champ Jason Lair through a couple of yellows on the 6th and 7th laps. The race went caution free the rest of the way, but Amarillo’s Danny Davidson was on a scamper from 13th with a win in mind. Lair pulled in with a sour motor and Davidson moved in to attack the leader in the final few laps. Davison used lapped traffic to his advantage and pulled alongside the leader going down the back chute on the final lap, taking the lead for the final two turns to score his 2nd A Class win of the season and the $400 winner’s share. A disappointed Keeler settled for leading 19 ½ laps in his runner up finish, but results from Non Wing action were sure to help the mood. OKC’s Mike Matherly came in third in points, trailing by just 95 markers behind Lawton’s Brandon Boggs, Matherly took a giant step in to the title conversation with his run from 10th to third, with Michael Meek placing a solid fourth at the finish and 2nd place point man Derrick McBride also moving in on the A Class point lead with a drive from 11th to complete the top five finish. Boggs was raced ahead of McBride for the first half of the race before his power plant appeared to sour in the closing laps, relegating the University of Oklahoma Freshman Enginner to an 11th place finish. Texas swept feature action in the A Class, as Johnny B took the first of four transfers in the 12 lap B Feature. A Class heats were won by Davidson, Lair, Butler, and Tulsa area racer Cade Cowles. Keeler seized the early lead with Tuttle’s Cody Carter working by Alexander for the 2 spot a few laps in. The first red flag fell on the 8th round as Sheldon Johnson flipped his #22s. Johnson was okay, but done for the night. Keeler, Carter, and El Reno Turf Tire rookie Tony Penick paced top three for the next couple of laps before disaster struck at the halfway point when Alexander and Yukon’s Dillon Laden collided for a series of violent flips in turn three. The ambulance was called onto the track to assist the banged up racers - with Alexander eventually taken to an area hospital and treated for significant bruises and lacerations. It’s just been a horribly unlucky season for the up and coming Alexander, and we wish him the best for a quick and full recovery. Keeler picked up where he left off on the restart and went unchallenged to his first win of the season at I-44 Riverside, eventually leading 39.5 of his 40 A Feature laps between the two headlining stock 600 classes. Tony Penick matched a season best with a runner up finish as Tulsa area gasser Cade Cowles drove from 12th to claim the final podium spot. Cody Carter and Brian Martin completed the top five finish. Wells settled for the runner up spot with Laplante claiming third. Brant Woods and Emme Johnson completed the top five finish. Junior Sprint heats went to Pendergrass and Wells.
