Dawei to form ethnic party Dawei Watch July 18 A group of individuals submitted an application for the registration of Dawei Nationalities Party at the Union Election Commission (UEC) in Nay Pyi Taw on July 16. The 19-member group said the establishment of Dawei political party was aimed at enabling Dawei people — as an ethnic race — to jointly participate in nation-building endeavors, reinforcing the cultural identity and distinguishing characteristics of Dawei national race, said U Zaw Oo, a member of the group. He said through political platform the party will work for the interest of local people to gain tangible benefits from projects like Dawei Project. “As for our people, we are the first to set up a political party,” he said. U Tun Kyi, another member of the group from Maungmakan Village, wants the party to be transparent and work with goodwill. “I hope the party would help Dawei people to be more recognized as ethnicity,” he said. Dawei people have not had a political party before but they had previously formed a Dawei national battalion under the Kayin National Union (KNU). The government puts Dawei people in the majority Bamar group among 135 nationalities in Myanmar.
