Day - 4 of Navarathri. Favorite Hymn of the day - Sri Soundarya Lahari. A set of 100 verses that mean Waves of Beauty - verses that are sublime in their description of the Divine Mother Goddess. One always finds it strange that an ascetic like Sri Adi Shankaracharya should have composed these esoteric verses that depict the Mothers sensuous beauty. And thereby hangs a tale - it is said that Adi Shankara once went to Kailasa and saw a most beautiful poem (authored by Lord Shiva himself) about the Mother Goddesss rapturous allure written on the walls there. As he began reading them, Ganesha fearing that this secret hymn should get disclosed to mankind began erasing it from below. So, Adi Shankara returned to earth with the knowledge of the first 41 verses (known as Ananda Lahari) and then proceeded to compose the remaining 59 (known as Soundarya Lahari). It is said that the Soundarya Lahari is the basis of many later verses on the Mother including the Abhirami Andhadhi.
