Day - 7 of Navarathri. Favorite Ambal Hymn of the day : Sri Durga Suktham. Part of the triumvirate of Sukthams (Durga Suktham, Sri Suktham and Medha Suktham, in praise of Mother Goddess Durga, Goddess of Wealth - Lakshmi and Goddess of Knowledge - Saraswathi respectively), the Durga Suktham is found appearing in the Maha Narayana Upanishad. When I was researching for this post, I came across some very interesting conversations on special interest forums and I found one bit absolutely captivating: The Durga Suktham seems to actually be a hymn in praise of Lord Agni - the God of fire, while in practice it is recited as a prayer to Goddess Durga Devi. Why the duality? One interpretation is that the fire mentioned in the prayer actually pertains to Kundalini Energy and the reigning deity of the same is none other than the Mother Goddess. When we read the Suktham keeping in mind this fact, then the meanings are crystal clear. A prayer that is supposed to remove all difficulties in ones life and enhance the power of Kundalini - the serpentine energy that lies coiled within each of us!
