Day 10 of the 16 days of action to raise awareness of domestic violence situations Marys story Mary, a young woman from an African country, married an Irish citizen in Ireland while she was still in the asylum system. Even though the marriage was officially registered, Mary did not apply for immigration status based on her relationship, as her applications under international protection were still awaiting a decision. Mary became pregnant, and during the pregnancy, difficulties in her relationship with her husband came to a head. Her husband became violent towards her and she left the home to seek the protection of a refuge. Having spent some time in the refuge she returned to the hostel accommodation provided for those seeking international protection. Many submissions and representations have been made to the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) through her legal representative in the Refugee Legal Service seeking a resolution of her situation. Marys baby was born in September and is entitled to be an Irish citizen by virtue of the father being Irish. However, the father will not cooperate with establishing the child’s citizenship, and court proceedings are on-going. In the meantime the mother and new-born child continue to reside in hostel accommodation. Mary is receiving assistance from a member organisation of the Domestic Violence Coalition.
