Day 12 - Advent Morning Minute with Pastor Jason Cullum VERSES: Isaiah 29:13-16 The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught. Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.” Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?” You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? KEY THOUGHT: Do those verses sound familiar? Maybe you heard someone else in the Bible quote those words? Jesus used them to confront the religious leaders who continuously were missing the point and pointing out his “rule breaking” ways. It’s sad how we loose sight of what’s right and think we’re close to God only to be disobedient and realize were merely going through the motions. God never intended to begin a religion…He sought to create a relationship. All to often we settle for routine and slip into rigid patterns and neglect to give God our love and devotion. If we want to be called His children then we must be obedient and worship Him honestly and sincerely…besides…I can’t hide anything from God. David learned this through his trial and penned these words, “Search me O God and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:1-2) He knew it was pointless to try and hide from God. He knows us better then we know ourselves. If our hearts are wrong. If our motives are insincere. If we seek our own gain…He already knows it. Don’t become a religious elitist. Instead rest in the knowledge that you have a Father who knows you and know your heart, yet He was still willing to give His Son for you. That’s love! PRAYER: Dear God, help me to realize the foolishness of trying to hide things from you and know that it is better to let you have your way with me. Help me to not fall into the trap of religious routines but daily live in the freedom of a passionate relationship with You.
