Day 185: My maternal grandfather was sometimes the brunt of our humor. Of course our comments were said behind his back. The humor about Nampa was that he ALWAYS found something nice to say about everyone. Our favorite thing to make fun of was his comment about our youngest sister. She boiled water for his morning cup of instant coffee and he would say: “my granddaughter sure knows how to boil water.” We thought that was humorous because most people make the comment about others who can “not boil water.” He had more substantive compliments about everyone else. My sister can now do more than boil water – she can really cook. As I age, I have come to appreciate Nampa’s ability to find something genuine and nice to say about others. He loved orange slices and offered them to everyone. I don’t care for orange slices but I took them and when he left the room, I would put them back in the bag. I could not make myself say “no thank you” when he offered them because I felt it would hurt his feelings. Blessed Assurance was his favorite hymn and he would crank that old hymn up any time of day or night and sing his heart out. He sang the entire hymn before stopping. Nampa was a very sweet, loving and kind man who loved to share with others. So grateful to have grown up with grandparents.
