Day 2. . .3 Things I Am Thankful For. . . 1.) FARMERS! It’s been said that we need a doctor or lawyer at times throughout our lives, but we need a FARMER every day as things don’t magically appear in our grocery stores and restaurants without these heroes!! 2.) My parents, Glenn and Becky Young. . .Their legacies live on in the hearts of many even though my dad died in 1996 and my mom in 1997. Their love for God, for each other, and for their four children radiated in our household and throughout the community. From them I learned that we are all put on this earth to be a blessing to others; Work hard and play hard—My dad was an awesome businessman and juggled many enterprises seamlessly which included his grading business, a farm, real estate, etc., and didn’t steer away from hard work and long hours. My mom was a stay-at-home mom who handled all of the books for my dad’s businesses, was active in church and community happenings, and was a wonderful mom to us four kids. (I can never remember her raising her voice to us, yet we knew to listen.) She made sure that we were in Youth, Sunday School, choir, Scouts, sports, music lessons, 4-H, etc., and was always a grade mother at school. My parents’ strong work ethic was instilled in us, and we were put on the payroll at an early age. But, my parents also believed that playing together made for a strong family--So many memories of our vacations together, our Christmases in sunny Florida, chasing tennis balls on our tennis court and through the field, weekends at the lake, watermelon on most hot summer day afternoons, celebrations which always included Mama Young, my Aunt Doris, Uncle Gene, and Cousin Eugenia, the thrill of my daddy’s latest finds or purchases which ranged from horses to goats to pontoons to garages with drive-in bank windows, to a section of a grocery store, to campers for playhouses, etc.; Family is everything; Invest wisely; You can accomplish more through niceness and sweetness (but don’t mistake niceness for weakness!); Education is a #1 priority—College was an expectation and my parents gladly invested in the lives of us kids through college educations at King’s College, UNC-G, NCSU, and Lenoir-Rhyne; Keep a song in your heart—We always sung when we were in the car together—both hymns and funny songs (which my dad created as he went!). My parents were also very supportive of my piano and organ training and spent long hours beside me at the piano and at the church listening to the melodies that came out of the pipes as I played. I could go on. . .and on. . .but, I will forever by thankful for my parents and the immense love they showered on me and my brother and sisters and the many life lessons they instilled through their faith, wisdom, and love! 3.) FB and the avenue it affords us to reflect and to share in the lives of others!
