Day 2 Day Two. We got a late start on it today because Angela so tired from yesterday. LOL We started out first for the Arch de Triumph. Dont let anyone kid you maps are deceiving. What looks like a couple of blocks on the map is really a couple of miles if youre walking. As we walked down the Champs de Élysees we finally arrived at the Arch de Triumph and climbed the winding staircase to the top and explored it all. That is one fantastic piece of work. It is in surprisingly good condition for its age. Completed in 1836, The Arc de Triomphe (in English: Triumphal Arch) honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Continuing on down the Champs Élysées we came to the Pizza Visuvio restaurant and had a wonderful French dinner at about 1:00PM Wow were we full! Pressing on with full stomachswe found the Place de la Concorde. Built in 1772 it is an amazing obelisk. It is an Egyptian obelisk - presented to Charles X by the Viceroy of Egypt - in the centre, its statues and its majestic dimensions, Place de la Concorde is one of the most beautiful squares in Paris. On again to finally arrive at the Louvre. Walking through its expansive gardens we finally entered through the beautiful glass pyramid entrance. The Louvre, in its successive architectural metamorphoses, has dominated central Paris since the late 12th century. Built on the citys western edge, the original structure was gradually engulfed as the city grew. The dark fortress of the early days was transformed into the modernized dwelling of François I and, later, the sumptuous palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Here we explore the history of this extraordinary edifice and of the museum that has occupied it since 1793. Sadly it closed at 6PM and we thought it would be open till 9PM so we will be back. On then be subway to the Eiffel Tower. Our feet were done by this time so we were happy for this transportation. It was dusk as we arrived and with the lights coming on it was magical. The cues were a little long but the wait was worth it. The views from the top were AWSOME. The Eiffel Tower was named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 Worlds Fair, it was initially criticised by some of Frances leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world.[1] The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; 6.98 million people ascended it in 2011. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010. The tower is 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. It was truly inspiring. We stopped off at the Charles de Gaulle station, at the Arch de Triumph, for dinner at McDonalds. Arriving back at our hotel after 11PM we were happy to shower and get to bed.
