Day 20 - This has been a very challenging weekend. With the good news we received Friday, we never expected to go into Friday evening with Allie experiencing high fevers, headaches, and nausea. As the weekend progressed, her symptoms became worse. On Saturday, Allie started to experience rigor, which is a sudden feeling of cold with full body shivering. High fevers soon followed the rigor. As a result of these changes, blood cultures were repeated, a CAT scan was done due to ongoing headaches, and a chest X-ray was ordered. Her symptoms did not improve through the night on Saturday with temps exceeding 108. They call these fevers neutropenic fevers, and say they are very common in cancer patients. This was by far one of the scariest 2 hours I have ever experienced as a mother, and as a nurse. A consult for an infectious disease physician was ordered this morning. The infectious disease physician believes this is all related to a side effect of the Vancomycin, which is one of the antibiotics that was started earlier in week to treat the bacterial infection. Vancomycin was discontinued today, and her symptoms should improve over the next 24 hours. Her CAT scan and her chest x-ray were clear. The blood cultures have not grown out anything at 24 hours, which is a great sign that the antibiotics are resolving the bacterial infection. We will know final results of blood cultures tomorrow. I am so thankful that God is overseeing Allies care, and my prayer for her physician to have wisdom and direction this morning was answered. Thank you everyone for continuing to pray for Allie. I know there are strength in numbers.
