Day 23 - 40 DOP. We have committed to eating quality food in proper portions. Lets think about portion sizes. I read a recent study by New York University nutritionist Marion Nestle, Ph.D., which addressed the changes in portion sizes (including restaurants and packaged goods) in the past 25 years. Some of her findings were amazing. * The U.S. food supply now provides each American with 500 more calories a day than it did in the 1970’s. * Serving sizes have doubled--and in some cases even quadrupled--since the 70’s for virtually all foods except a slice of white bread. * In many instances, so-called single servings of foods now greatly exceed the federally recommended serving size. Examples: pasta exceeds by 480 percent, muffins by 333 percent, and bagels by almost 200 percent. * Since the 70’s, single servings of soda have tripled, with a 32-ounce soft drink now being the norm. French fries served at most fast-food outlets have easily tripled in serving size during this period. * Kitchenware has also expanded in size, with restaurants now routinely using larger dinner plates, glasses, serving pans, even silverware. * Cookbooks have been affected as well. Recipes that used to serve eight, for example, now serve four, meaning the serving size has doubled. We need to start thinking quality not quantity! The average persons stomach is only the size of their fist! Less can be more when we choose foods that are dense and full of nutrition instead of empty calories. Eat well.
