Day 3 of a 3 day psychology conference that Im a panelist in is over. Thank God. Im beat. Literally. Im not a therapist. Never have been. Never will be. Im the token psychology professor in this crowd. And I dont subscribe to any school of thought or philosophy in the field. I teach the treatments for disorders that I believe work based on the current literature and science. Because of that, and because they think that I may be influencing students in their beliefs, everybody wants to convert me to their way. Especially after their speeches and presentations. The cognitive behaviorist to my right finishes, sits down and elbows me in the ribs. With a knowing smile. The Freudian to my left wraps up a slideshow, sits down and does the same. Right in the ribcage. Huge smile. The humanist at least finishes and gives me a big back slap. Probably because he wasnt sitting next to me. I almost expected a Jungian to jump out of the audience and poke me in the nose. Oh, wait.... But seriously. Im glad its over. I need a drink. And some Ben-Gay. Psychology conferences. Dont believe the hype. Nothing touchy-feely about this crew. Well. Maybe a little touchy-feely. Still. Rough crowd.
