Day #3 of my Universal Horror Movie viewing wrapped up with 1943s Son Of Dracula starring Lon Chaney Jr. as Count Alucard. So here we have a movie that breaks away from the actual Brahm Stoker Dracula continuation of Draculas Daughter and goes into fresh territory. In this movie, Count Alucard, which is Dracula spelled backwards, travels to a plantation in a Louisiana swamp where he meets up with a Morbid woman who wants to live forever. The woman makes a deal with the vampire to give her immortality in exchange for his protection. Alucard also wants New Blood as hes pretty much drained the life out of his home country of Hungary. (Read as Romanian). :D This movie changes things up a bit from the usual Dracula story in that there is a Who Done it feel and a Love Conquors Evil story going on at the same time. There is a lot of good scenes in this movie, especially when Dracula chases down a man to drink his blood in a graveyard, only to be thwarted by a shadow of a cross in the moonlight which falls on him. There is also a great scene later in the film where the same man burns Alucards coffin and the count tries to get him to put out the flames. The special effects really have improved from the earlier Universal films and they really shine in the transformation scenes when Alucard turns from mist into vampire. But the best overall scene in the movie is when the woman goes to the swamp and Alucards Coffin floats up from under the water, fog comes out of the coffin, and then Alucard appears...then in a tracking shot, the count moves across the swamp and into the womans arms. The ending of the film is great too! i wont tell you how that rolls, but you will like it! Well worth watching! Ok...so over the weekend I will be watching House of Dracula, the last Dracula film in the Universal Monsters series and then moving on to Frankenstein. see you Tuesday with 2 more reviews! https://youtube/watch?v=B0rPaeTHJmY
