Day 3 of the Challenge. To remind you, my friend, Byron K Pittman posted: So I was challenged by Callie Gust McDonald , to post 3 things a day for seven days, that Im thankful for. Today, the theme is the Army. Im 48 years old. I joined the Army when I 23. I retired when I was 46. At this point, and probably forever, my Army career defines my life. To make it just ONE item on this list is IMPOSSIBLE. It has to be, AT LEAST, 3 things on my list. So, here we go: #7: The things I was given the opportunity to do in the Army, musically/performing: I played euphonium, trombone, tuba, trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, and percussion. I sang, acapella. I led tuba quartets, rock bands, and acapella groups. I conducted. I arranged music. I MCed concerts. I was given free reign to create my script, as an MC. ... As a music librarian, I was given the leeway to pick out music for MAJOR ensembles. #8: I traveled. ... The countries I was able to go to, and work include: Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, South Korea, the demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, Germany, France, Austria, Iraq, and Japan. ... Getting to go to each of those places, get a feel for the culture/their circumstances, and make friends in each of those places was LIFE CHANGING! #9: The people I was PRIVILEGED to serve with: In the course of 23 years, I was lucky enough to serve with some MONSTER musicians. Beyond that, I was able to serve with some INCREDIBLE NCOs and officers, both within the Army Band field, and outside of it. ... Ive been studying the characteristics of good leadership since I was in 7th grade. The Army Field Manual on leadership is one of the best texts I have EVER read, on the subject. ... I had the honor of serving with A LOT of unnamed heroes that embodied EVERYTHING I have EVER learned about good leadership. --- I reserve the right to talk more about military musicians, just like I did my Grandpa. ... and it wont count towards the quota.
