Day 3 – Friday, June 7, Organize Day at Moody UMC, Galveston, TX What a facility-- this is huge! As come in west entrance last evening, we walk by kitchen area, and area with tables, pool tables on left full of teens, then pass a gym on the left also filled with teens playing volleyball –this is 10 pm, then big area of lounge chairs, to long hallway of classrooms where we have 2 carpeted rooms with bathroom in the middle where we put our sleeping bags on floor. Second story full of classrooms, big bathroom and showers… another part of the church is the sanctuary I guess. All day today the gym filled with kids, different groups, many little ones… learn they have graduations here, host lots of kids on mission trip from all over US, host volunteers when hurricane damage. Gary and Devon from Ohio here. Gary’s, 74, wife is social worker to HD families in Columbus, Ohio area He rode with us across South Dakota to Minneapolis in 2011, and last year from Grand Junction to Las Vegas. Devon is 25, beautiful, bubbly, kindergarten teacher in an HD family, grandmother passed away, her uncle has it, her mom is at risk (has not developed symptoms/may or may not have the defective gene, does not want to test to find out). This is her first long distance ride. In the afternoon Mary Ann from California arrives at Hobby airport, delivered here by an aunt of an HD friend who lives in Galveston. Pam her niece lives in California and we see Pam every year at convention. Mary Ann had previously mailed her bike to the 1 bike shop in Galveston and they put it together today. Mary Ann is Sherri’s sister, so the aunt of Justin, Sherri’s son with HD symptoms. Her first cross country ride. Then his evening Heather and Hope Chynoweth from Grand Junction arrived. They had flown from GJ Wednesday to their sister’s in Texas, I have forgotten where, 4 hours away, and sister and husband drove them here today. Heather is a physician assistant at my son’s (Greg) medical office so has heard about this ride for years, rode 15 miles with us last year, this year wanted to do the whole trip, and her sister Hope decided too (music teacher), so busy day with getting everyone in, to grocery store, gas station, bike shop, sorting bags, what to take on bicycle, etc., so never did get any sightseeing which is too bad! And even had to have a meeting tonight to decide who with what van, trading drivers, lunch on the road, much more organization needed than when just Marie and I for many years… So this will be a new adventure. We will see how it goes tomorrow.. Beautiful day here, 85 high , sunny, no wind or rain!
