Day 31 - Ive had so many jobs in my lifetime. My first job was at the Dairy Queen in Holdenville. My Papaw would come in every time I worked for coffee. He sat in the front booth and talked to everyone who walked in. I worked with a lady on the weekends who loved to crochet. She made me so many things, many of which I still have. My next job was in the summers at a Bealls in Lafayette. I loved that job. I worked all day five days a week. I just knew I was a grown up, spending every penny I managed to make. When I went to Southeastern, I worked at the newspaper, writing stories and selling ad space. After I got married and moved to Ponca City I worked at Wendys. I opened, back when they had breakfast and worked through lunch. It was there I realized people can be pretty mean to someone who works at a fast food restaurant. After that, I cleaned houses and sold Avon. But where I learned the most about working with the public was my time at TG&Y, later Bargain Time. I did everything there; I opened, I closed, I stocked, I straightened, I counted money, I worked outside during sidewalk sales, I carried things to peoples cars, I said the announcement at night, I decorated the trees for Christmas, I wrapped gifts, I fetched layaways. I had a wonderful boss who accommodated my class schedule and never said a word to me when I would run through the store to the back to clock in when I was late. But my favorite job ever was my years as a toddler teacher. From the time I got there in the morning until I walked out the door in the afternoon, I was immersed in puzzles, board books, Bible verses, sweet songs, snacks, diapers, runny noses, boo-boos, naps, and a LOT of cleaning up. It was hard work and a lot of work was required from home. But having those children all day made it so worth it. They blessed me in ways I still remember. When a toddler smiles at you or gives you a hug, its genuine. Of course, I had my favorites. (Every teacher does no matter what they say!) But each year I loved each child and loved going to work. I have skipped over many other jobs in between. But each one changed me somehow, teaching me about others and a lot about myself.
