Day 31 of #walkingborneo - Kampung Rumantai Yesterday we went fishing in the jungle with the Dusun community of Kampung Rumantai. What makes this community special? They have protected their forest and maintained their culture. The result? An incredible, lush green landscape and a happy community. It was fascinating to see their knowledge of the forest and all that it has to offer. We collected various vegetables, medicines and fruits as we trekked through the forest on our way down to the river. Pictued below is one small white fruit at the base of a plant which tasted exactly like a kiwi. It is a favourite of the children in the village who love to collect it on their way to school. They quickly and efficiently caught a lot of small fish and made a most delicious lunch. Barbequed fish, jungle vegetables, rice, chilli, lime and salt. Simple, fresh and incredibly healthy food. The most impressive part of the fishing trip was learning how they keep a small section of the river as a no-fish zone. This allows the fish to lay eggs, breed and helps avoid any overfishing issues. It is just one of many examples of how they respect nature and help the forest maintain a balance. There are very few Dusun communities left like this one and it is a real honour to be able to visit them and experience their way of life. They have a homestay and are currently working on building a tourism programme. We would highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in seeing the real Dusun culture and way of life.
