Day 33 of #100daysofmusic - The Cars - Heartbeat City I havent seen one for a while but those quizzes where people were asked which albums they would like to have with them if they were stuck on a deserted island were always an interesting read. Leaving aside the fact that you would you need electricity, a record player with a stylus that hopefully never wore out and a small collection of vinyl albums (preferably 10) the concept is pretty sound. ;) My favourite record in that case would be an album of me saying things like Help! Help! and Im over here!! These days you would probably hope you had electricity, a computer and an iPod or a hard drive so you could listen to a large selection of music but that detracts from the scarcity aspect of the original concept and being forced to choose one album over another. That would be after you chose how you were going to prepare the coconuts for breakfast, lunch and tea. Anyhoo....Heartbeat City by The Cars would be a great album to have with you. I had always liked The Cars singles from Lets Go through to Shake It Up and then of course this album. My brother Greg bought me the album for Christmas and it was my soundtrack for that Summer. The singles You Might Think, Magic, Drive and Hello Again are all crackers but so are the other album tracks without a weak track in sight. Brilliantly produced by Mutt Lange he managed to allow The Cars to sound like The Cars without wooah-woah-woah group backing vocals like he used with Def Leppard, Loverboy, Bryan Adams and others. It peaked at no.3 in the U.S. but went 4x platinum and those four singles made it to 7, 12, 3 and 20 respectively. Later single Why Cant I Have You made it to 33 and the title track was released as a single but didnt crack the top 40. I was suitably impressed enough to then go and buy all their back catalogue. I think I will need to work out the other 9 albums Im allowed to have now. :)
