Day 338 Lakota and Leonitis - Its hot.....so hot that even with - TopicsExpress

Day 338 Lakota and Leonitis - Its hot.....so hot that even with the lure of the shimmering pools (and that front pool does look inviting) the dogs just wanted to go outside, potty, stand at the fence and look at the trail behind us for a couple of minutes than go back inside to the air conditioning. No playing today...too hot. One of our angels brought us some additional pools today and we are so excited to have them as it appears this summer is going to be a very very hot one. The dogs LOVE the pools, even those like Lakota and Leo who just use them as a giant water bowls...they still love having them out there. Im bound and determined to get Leo to at least wander through one of the pools this summer...may have to get a bit wet myself. I think he would like it. He loves to dunk half of his head in the water when he drinks so I know he likes water. Lakota seemed to really enjoy her bath but I dont think shes ever going to be considered a water dog and the likelihood of my being to even drag her into the pool is slim. Shell do it on her own if shes going to do it at all...shes stubborn like that at times. Tonight Id like to talk a little bit about Cinnamon. Cinnamon has the dubious honor of being the longest resident of the PAWS program. We have had Cinnamon in our program since 2009. Yes, shes been with us for 5 years. Not all dogs get adopted quickly. We have had many many dogs that have been with us for over a year....although 5 years is certainly not common (we have 2 dogs with that dubious 5 year length of time in our program) Cinnamon is a roughly 6 1/2 year old Boston Terrier/Beagle mix as our best guess. That means weve had her since she was about a year and a half in age. Cinnamon is cute, shes small, about the size of a Beagle and shes as sweet as she can be once she gets to know you. She is a bit leery of some strangers, does better with women, but appreciates getting to know someone a bit before they pet her etc. I wish I could tell you why Cinnamon hasnt been adopted, the truth is, weve had dogs with much worse issues than Cinnamons that have come in and been adopted. Cinnamon is not a fan of children and cannot go into a home with children. Now that doesnt mean if you have grandchildren that visit that you cant have Cinnamon. Just know that when the grand kids come over, Cinnamon needs to go in her crate or in a closed off bedroom until they leave. Cinnamon wont mind that at all. Even if you would have to walk her out on leash to potty a couple of times because the grand kids are spending the night...shed be fine with that. Cinnamon does get along fine with other dogs, she does not however like dogs that get up in her face and are ill mannered. I dont blame her on that one at all. She currently lives in a foster home with 3 other dogs (from 130lbs down to 10lbs) and a cat and does fine. What we know of Cinnamons past lets us know why she may have some of these issues. She was removed by Social Services and Animal Control from a mentally handicapped man who could not take care of himself, much less take care of Cinnamon. We know she spent a great deal of time in a kennel, we assume the living conditions and situation was not good. Our guess is she may have been terrorized by children at some point...likely while still in her kennel where she could not escape. She had a pretty rough life before she came to us. She has made wonderful strides forward while here and especially since going into a foster home who of course had no idea shed still be living with her 3 years later.... this is a good dog who would really love to be in her own home someday. Please feel free to get the word out there about Cinnamon. We know there is a home out there for her! Shes even been featured in a National magazine and is the cover girl for a book series! More tomorrow!
