Day 4. After youve done all you can, you just stand. —Donnie McClurkin I just didnt understand. Why? Why cant I go too? My family is HUGE. And the most difficult thing in the world for me was watching everybody go to school in the morning leaving me behind with my Grandma Dinah. They all went to someplace called Head Start, and it sounded like Heaven to me. All I knew is that they walked there and I was promised that my turn would come. Then something called integration happened and that meant I had to be bussed … more like a station wagon … to a nursery school across town. I cried. Fast forward to day four: weve looked at a wide array of material this week as Lunt fellows, anything and everything in the Lunt-Fontanne canon is fair game. We began to zero in on a few things to share with an invited audience on Saturday evening and we did a run-thru of sorts that was both painful and jaw-dropping. Painful because it was way too long and jaw-dropping because I watched a stunning actress play a scene from A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and then sing Despinas aria from COSI FAN TUTTI … oh, and shes several months pregnant. That was just one example of the literature associated with Alfred and Lynn (as they are referred to here), but more importantly the range of material that regional actors are capable of doing. After a very long day, we were shuttled back to the hotel and all I wanted was to lay down in my jacuzzi tub for … rest. But we were invited to an exclusive event, a garden party on a lovely lake with longtime supporters of the estate. I got dressed, snapped a few pics and got on the van. After cocktails and chat we settled down for a lakeside dinner and then he said it: I would like all of the actors to STAND. Wait a minute. You want me to do what -- after this excruciatingly long day? I have done everything that I can do today!? We would just like to say thank you for showing us what it means to live by doing what you do. Tears. Then it hit me, the reason why I couldnt go to Head Start. I had to integrate then so that I could be right here right now. After youve done all you can, you just stand. Gauntlet.
