Day 4: Preview of a forthcoming public art project. In July 2010, I was awarded a commission, via the San Francisco Arts Commission, for a permanent piece for the San Francisco International Airport. There have been lots of ups and downs and construction delays, but we are currently scheduled to install in October 2015. The design for Large Variation: Floating World is based on the painting I shared with you on Day 2. The piece is a ceramic mosaic wall, 10 tall and 109 long, and it will be installed in Terminal 3 at SFO. I cannot tell you what a joy it has been to work with the wonderful team at Mosaika Art and Design in Montreal. Collaborating with them to realize this project has been one of the highlights of my career. Saskia, Kori, Marc and the entire team of artists are so wonderful. These pictures were taken during the final quality check before the piece was packed up and shipped to SF. It was amazing to watch the Mosaika team coordinate and assemble the various small sections into larger sections of about 10 x 25 on the studio floor. We viewed the piece from above and, with a laser pointer, located areas that needed a little more work before the sections were wrapped, labeled and packed. The team walked on the piece in stocking feet, making little adjustments here and there. These photos show the large sections, adhered to to a sticky backing. After the quality check, the team placed a similar film on the front. When we install, the backing will come off, the sections will be adhered to the mortared wall, and then the film on the front will be removed. Then the piece will be grouted with six custom colors. I cant wait!
