Day 5 – Sunday We started the day in beautiful sunshine, with some patrols electing to make themselves fry up. After inspection, it was straight into our Geocaching activity. For those not in the know, this is a high tech treasure hunt played with GPS receivers, using specific co-ordinates to pin point boxes of treasure hidden by other game players. For our badge, the patrols, have to set a trail for each other around the campsite using clever ways to reveal the GPS co-ordinates and ingenious ways of hiding the boxes (caches). Already we’ve seen trivia questions, morse code and anagrams used as a way to reveal the correct digits. Today we started our ‘word assassin’ game. This game sees each Scout and leader being given the name of another Scout or leader (their victim) and a random word that they must get them to try to say. No one knows who’s after who, and with random words like ‘Eraser’, ‘playground’, ‘ski slopes’, and ‘telephone’, all words are potential no nos. If the word gets said then they are out and their mission is passed to the murderer, in a large loop. No one trusts each other, but some evil methods are now being used to get the victim to say the word. Special mention to Scout SI who has so far got 6 people out - a new camp record. She has become the deadly assasin! After lunch, it was off to Radley College and their very nice swimming pool to meet with the Oxford Diving School. 42 of us was the largest group they’ve ever handled but they quickly got us kitted up and into the pool. Half the group did Scuba diving and the others snorkelling and duck diving before swapping over half way through. It’s been a long standing Scouting ambition of mine to invest new Scouts underwater. This was achieved today with the investitures of Scouts JL and JL. So with a circle of scuba equipped Scouts surrounding the 2 investees and me, we went under the water and the boys were presented with their (laminated) certificates and 16th Edgware scarves. We’ll see how the underwater photos come out later but a very successful investiture and a special proud Scout Leader moment for me. Back at the campsite, Chef put the barbeque on and burgers and sausages were soon ready . After dinner, the PLs and APLs went through their final preparations for tomorrow’s expedition challenge and the rest of the Scouts prepared some campfire sketches for later. Once it gets dark, it will be time for our first proper campfire. During this evening, the investiture of the 2 boys will be concluded with them reciting their Scout promise. Special moment of the evening, will certainly be the presentation of the Chief Scouts Gold Award to JO. This is the highest award a Scout can achieve and a very well deserved achievement. Well done J!!! What an amazing day! I should add that parents need to have needle and thread ready for September when badges from this camp are handed out. • Nights away • Hikes • Geocaching badge • Camp Chef • Time on the water • Camper • Adventure Challenge • Outdoor / Outdoor Plus Challenge • Expedition Challenge for our PLs and APLs. Are all heading the Scout’s way…….You are warned! I should also add the Scouts this year, are one of the nicest group of children we’ve ever taken on a Summer Camp. They are being an absolute pleasure to have here with practically no problems from any of them. Happy leaders. Night night Stephen
