Day 53 Sat 25th- Another hostel breakfast and we were all packed ready for our day on the road. Shelsey, Mike and myself visited the morning markets first though to stock up on some fresh fruit & nuts (food we had been lacking recently). What followed was the bus transfer from hell to get from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. Similar to the drive from Chiang Mai to Pai this stretch of road had continuous zig zags although was three times longer, we were thrown back and forth inside the minivan trying not to squish the people beside us. On more than one occasion it seemed that we would crash into on-coming traffic or skid off the road and flip in the ditch or worse go off the unguarded cliff edge on the opposite side. Luckily we did get through unscathed simply mildly traumatised. We walked through town trying to find suitable accommodation and settled at Souk Som Boun where we could get private double fan rooms for 60,000kip. To save even more we split into pairs. The town of Vang Vieng is not very large, it consists of 3 main asphalt roads that run parallel to each other with small rocky tracks leading off in all directions. The town has been built on the riverbank & most tourist activities involve the river itself- the most famous of which being tubing. Where you drift down the river on a giant rubber tyre stopping off at bars along the way. You can also enjoy speed boat rides & kayaking. Upon returning to the hostel from my orientation walk we all went to Amigos Mexican Restaurant nearby. It has only been open for 3 weeks and the food was delicious with reasonable prices (for Western dishes) they did however forget two of our meals. We sipped on sangria and beers while watching the sun dip behind the limestone cliffs. Once nightfall had settled it was time to party. We met up with Gègè (French) with whom we had met back at Luang Prabang and hit up Kangaroo Sunset Bar where they offer free drinks for two half hour periods throughout the night, you can imagine we got pretty sloshed. Rob and I stumbled back in the early hours, stopping only for a late night baguette at the street stalls. Laos made some excellent sandwiches!
