Day 6: January 17, 2014 What do you really want? Bible Reading: Luke 18:18-29 and 19:1-10 Imagine if this happened to you. You see a missionary standing on Kreshatik preaching. You decide to wait a while and just listen to him talk to strangers. You’re curious to see if he “does it right.” Soon, a fine dressed businessman approaches him and asks, “Sir, how can I have eternal life?” You think, “Wow, this is amazing. Tell him about Jesus!” Instead the missionary tells him about laws from the Bible that he must follow. You are aggravated, “No, you’re blowing it!” You want to scold the missionary and take over, but you listen instead. You’re surprised when the businessman says, “I have followed Jesus teaching since I was very young.” The missionary replies, “Then just sell your business and make Jesus your whole life.” You might find yourself angrily saying, “Where in the bible does it say we have to sell our businesses? But this was Jesus who spoke to the young businessman. Shortly after this incident, a short government official, hated by the people, climbed up a tree just to be near Jesus. This time Jesus didnt tell him to give everything away. Instead, he invited himself for dinner. Why did Jesus answer Zachaeus differently? I think it was because Zachaeus had one goal... to be near Jesus. Maybe we get the whole motivation to be a Christian wrong sometimes. Do you want Jesus? Do you want the actual man to love and to hold, or could it possibly be that you are after something else? In the end, it is truly all about Jesus and who you are to him. Friend with Jesus? Servant of Jesus? Brother of Jesus? Has this relationship become real? If you notice, the man who wanted eternal life walked away sad, but the man who found Jesus gave half of his possessions away and gained friendship with Jesus… eternally. Want Jesus. -Jesse Armstrong
