Day 8: Surprises My big surprise of the day is that the days are shorter. I took Miles for his walk to the cemetery, wearing my sunglasses. While we walked and I talked on my phone, which I sometimes do, I failed to notice that the day was ending. It was still early and I thought that I had left plenty of time to get back to the car. Well, not only was it 54 degrees and becoming chillier, I noticed the perpetual lights were coming on. Very few things creep me out, but those darn perpetual lights get me every time. They are just so creepy and they sneak up on me. A few come on fairly early, so I tend to ignore the early lighters, but then suddenly, the others are showing their glow and they are the creepy ones. The solar lamps ones are not so bad, but those other ones make me get out there as quickly as I can. So I made a creepy exit from the cemetery only to discover that when I went to put my glasses on to drive, that I had my prescription sunglasses. They are not so dark that I cannot see, but it is harder to focus with them at night. I discovered that I can see the road just fine without them, taking back roads, but then when I approached a speed limit sign, it was too fuzzy to see. We Western PA folks know that our speed limits on our back roads, which are really our main roads, change about every fifteen feet, or so it seems, so driving unable to read the speed limit signs could cost some ticket money. But mind you, I was still safe because I could see the road, the other cars, which are few and far between, and even the deer. It was just the signs that were the challenge. So, I gave in and wore the glasses and took the extra care to focus. On the way home, I went by Forbush’s to see if the lines were long being it is their next to last day, and my second surprise was that they were not at all. It might have to do with the temp. Lessons learned from my big surprise today were pay attention to the sky and not the clock until it gets dark at 5:00pm, which will happen, and to make sure that I have extra layers to put on as the temp drops quickly at dusk this time of year. This is not Kentucky and sometimes I forget that.
