Day 8: The migration and the family. Today started with a phone - TopicsExpress

Day 8: The migration and the family. Today started with a phone call at 0130am.... My heart leaped into my throat as I fumbled for the accept icon. Hello, Mrs Breukers... We just want to let you know that we are moving the twins... WHAT! Moving where! To another room. Oh, with a big sigh of relief! We were finally moved from our overflow room :) The overflow room was a small 3 cot room used when the nicu is full. The twins were changed to a normal 6 cot room which is much more spacious. The only downside to the bigger room is that instead of 3, there are 6 babies, which means 6 alarms/machines/beeping and crying... I thought I went home with the sound of alarms this last week.. I think that is about to get a whole lot worse. When we arrived at nicu we were informed that Abby conitued to open her bowels overnight and Ash changed pooey nappies from both Abigail and Aiden today. So I no longer need to talk about the kids poo! Yay. Another milestone met and surpassed. Aiden had his caffeine increased overnight (to the standard dose that extremely premature babies are on - he was started on half of the amount as he has been doing so so well) The caffeine has worked fairly well as he was a lot better today with his breathing and heart rate, he still drops his heart rate at times but not like yesterday afternoon. Abigail is Abigail and she keeps us on our toes a little more. She drops her heart rate/ breathing and oxygen saturations more frequently but she does recover herself more often than not and is already on the dose of caffeine Aiden is on. Aiden was also graded up to 14mls of breast milk every 2 hours and they are fortifying his milk, so it has more calories to fatten him up a little quicker. Because he is having good amount of milk now he also started taking vitamin D. Abigail has also had her feeds increased to 6mls every 2 hours but is still having occassional aspirates and sometimes does have a feed withheld. Her feeds are not yet fortified and she isnt taking big enough volumes to have vitamin D. She is also still having fluids due to not being on big enough volumes of milk. Abigails long line is having a few issues, because it isnt exactly where it should be it keeps being positional and the fluids keep alarming as it isnt going in properly. Im hoping the Drs review this either tomorrow or Monday, I dont want it to be resited if it doesnt have to be, but I dont want it to be a potential problem for Abby either. Abigail had the air in her nasal prongs turned down to 4 litres of air today from 5 litres yesterday. She was dropping her saturations during her cares and rather than going back to 5 litres of air, she had oxygen turned on at 23%. I want to ask the Drs on rounds tomorrow if it would be better to go back up in air rather than recommence oxygen when she has been off the oxygen for a little while now. Im starting to turn Aiden over onto his back now in the isolette and I feel like I am getting a little more confident with him each day. Abigail still scares me a little more as she is smaller and has more cords/wires/attachements. I still feel like they are so small and so fragile (I probably feel that way because they are!) but I feel like I can help to care for them a little better now. The biggest and best part of the day today was FINALLY getting to hold both of our babies together. Having them next to each other and back with me was the most incredible feeling, I had ash next to me and our babies with me and I felt absolutely whole. I was staring down at the precious miracles that we created and I was in complete awe of them, their drive/fight to survive, their perfect little bodies and adorable tiny features and in that hour that I had them back with me I felt the biggest waves of love. My family complete me. Now to finish off this post Id like to add a milestone that is not so much for the twins (its more for me) but it is important for the twins all the same... Today, day 8, I reached my 1st LITRE of expressed milk in a 24 hour period. Actually in my 24hr period I expressed a total of 1110mls! Thank you all for the incredible support, Myself and Ash are truely amazed and I know the love is something that helps us to stay positive for our wonder babies. Until tomorrow. X
