Day 8 – Canada’s conquest of Hungary…sort of… It was an off day for our team as today’s racing was solely for the mixed boats at 500m. Canada had another stellar day with 5 gold and 1 bronze. The gold medals included 1 by our Mixed U23 team (Amanda Woodley, Elizabeth Mackenzie and Kaitlin Fehr)…Congrats girls!!! For the gender boats (Women’s and Open), it was an off day. Some of us spent the day walking around the city centre of Szeged and seeing such sites as the bronze mayfly sculpture, the main Cathedral, the central plaza and the Salami Museum…seriously!! Before anyone reply’s, it hasn’t anything to do with what your thinking…some of us learned about the history of salami and paprika in Hungary. Personally, I skipped it…. Others went to the water park and slides but I thought that had potential to be a little creepy, too, and I wasn’t sure if speedo wear was mandatory. We strolled around town looking for shade as it continues to be mid 30’s. We took public transit back to our hotel as we didn’t want to wait for the other group and drive home with them…besides, they had a parking ticket. I have posted some photos of the city taken during our wanderings today...these are on a previous photo-album post. It is not an ancient town as it has been wiped out several times by floods but some of the architecture gets restored after each wash out so it is still classic Hungarian in the centre core. As you move further out, you see the Soviet influence….big blocky cement structures. 200m races are tomorrow. We had a good team meeting tonight and we are HUNGRY!! and a little bit angry. I know this will give us an edge. For 200m races, there is no strategy, you start and then you finish. It is a brutal and intense 45 seconds….we plan to be on top of the podium tomorrow.
