Day 9 Epilepsy Awareness month: How to handle it if were hanging it and I have a seizure. Since I just talked about what to do if somebody is hashing a seizure, and said... if youre epileptic, keep your friends informed about your specific needs, Im going to share my specific needs after a seizure. I currently have grand mal seizures. Typically they last five minutes. I always bite my tongue. Dont put anything in my mouth and tilt my head to the side, though Ive never thrown up during a seizure. Please dont call 911, I dont need a hospital bill to tell me Im epileptic... Again. I always have my phone on me. Find that and call my mom. Her number is listed under mom. Haha. She will tell you what to do. If she doesnt answer, you will need to know a couple more things. My postictal stage is extremely intense. I will probably nod in and out of consciousness. I will most likely not know who you are, what day it is or year it is, and I will continuously ask what happened. I may be extremely emotional and scared. Easy way to handle this: tall, to he in a calm, soothing voice. Like you would talk to a five year old who is scared and lost and confused. Answer my questions honestly. If I ask you who are, tell me your name and explain how we know each other. Ask me questions, too. Like what my name is, what day is it, what month is it, what I had for breakfast, if I took my meds. Probably for a while, my answers will be I dont know. But be patient, soothing, and calm and just keep asking simple questions. This helps my brain come back to awareness of my surroundings, eventually I will seem almost normal. Sorry so many posts in a row. Ive fallen behind! But I hope you read some useful tips and thanks for tunning in!
