Day 9 Is it Kapa’a or Kapa’a’a ?? The day started early - TopicsExpress

Day 9 Is it Kapa’a or Kapa’a’a ?? The day started early from our Powell Street hotel. We woke up early and left for the BART before breakfast. We had to ride to Oakland, take the bus to the Oakland airport, and get all checked in for an 8:30am flight. We planned for plenty of time and got to the check in counter about 50 minutes before our flight, but evidently we should have been there earlier. The agent was very helpful and even put us in the front of the security line. We had no time for breakfast but were soon on our way on the 5 hour flight to Hawaii. We would land in Maui and change planes for the short flight to Lihue airport on Kauai. During the flight we got to see an episode of Glee as well as the movie “Oz the Great and Powerful”. We had already seen the movie in IMAX 3D but it was still good to see it again. Maui appeared below the plane just as expected. We entered the open air terminal and were greeted with warm trade winds and gently swaying palm trees. Nice. Soon we were off to Kauai, and landed without any issues. We got our bags and headed for the rental car area. The lady was very nice and wanted to rent me a convertible for an extra twenty dollars a day. I told her if I was younger and still chasing women I might consider it, but I had been married to the same woman for 35 years and those days are gone. Furthermore, I would have to wear a hat to keep the sun off my head, so I opted for the Mazda 6 midsize instead. I asked a young couple in front of me if they had just gotten married, and they said that they had. I knew it was so because their wedding rings were so shiny. I told them to wait a while and theirs would look like mine after 35 years, and pointed them Nancy’s way for proof. They were real cute and I wished them well. We sped off for our condo at the break-neck speed of 35 miles an hour. That’s pretty fast on Kauai where everyone is really laid back. It doesn’t help at all to get in a hurry. I have also learned that in my old age. We drove to Kapa’a, not Kapa’a’a. This is another of my favorite movie lines, which of course was spoken by Nicholas Cage on “Honeymoon in Vegas” as he was searching for Sarah Jessica Parker on Kauai. We found our condo but it was still before the 3:00pm check in time, and we were starving. We had no breakfast and had very little snacking on the plan. We went to the nearest place we could find which was a breakfast-and-lunch place named Eggbert’s. Nancy got a BLT and I got a chicken sandwich. I was so thirsty I had about ten glasses of water to go with my two Longboard beers. We got to the condo and were pleased with our choice. It is a nice studio room with a rather large bathroom and queen bed. Air conditioning is a welcome addition, because it was hot today. We are on the first floor, and about 25 yards from the beach and pool. This will be great! The room has a small fridge, a microwave, a toaster oven, TV, computer access, and coffee maker. We rested a while and then drove down to Poipu to check out the other area of the island. We returned to Lihue and bought some shirts and groceries at the local Wal-Mart. The souvenir t-shirts were as low as four dollars. We then decided to eat supper so we drove down to the beach. We saw a sports bar with flags of college teams on display, and saw a Clemson flag right on the front. We will have to visit this place Thursday to see if the Tarheels can do anything in their game. We ate at a good Mexican restaurant across the street which was surprisingly good Mexican food for Hawaii. I had a margarita and four or five glasses of tea. Nancy had a taco salad with shredded beef instead of ground beef. She liked it and ate nearly all of it even though it was very large for a taco salad. We headed back to the local Safeway grocery store to pick up a few things that Wal-Mart did not have. While we were standing in line, I heard an older guy tell his buddy in line to look at my Clemson shirt. They asked me if I was going to the Georgia game and I told them that I was. They were from Athens GA but were still very nice. We ragged each other a little bit and they went on their way. Back at the condo, the weather is great and the air is cool. I am staying up late to get used to the three hour difference from Pacific time. Nancy is already sacked out. Now that we are in Hawaii, I feel that our vacation is finally starting. We were “on the go” so much the first week and it got us pretty tired. Now it is time to kick back and relax. We have no plans for the next two days, but I know something will come up. It always does. See you tomorrow!
